At the cemetery in Sydalen, local enthusiasts have rolled up their sleeves and made sure the gravesites look well kept. With a combination of intermittent rain and pleasant temperatures, the grass has grown rapidly, and the need for mowing has been clear.
Strong turnout for the working bee
Undis Aasegg recently invited people to a working bee, and the response was not long in coming.
After a visit to the cemetery, we can see that mowing is needed again. We are therefore holding a working bee tomorrow, Monday 15 June, at 6:00 p.m. We hope many of you will be able to come — then it will be done in no time. There will also be coffee and a bite to eat. Welcome!
And the call was answered. Afterwards, Aasegg wrote:
Great turnout and pleasant company at today's working bee. Thanks to all of you who took the time to make the cemetery so nice and turned the working bee into a cosy occasion.
No regular mower before summer 2026
Anton Ulriksen has been in touch with the church office and shares information about the situation going forward:
- A person has been hired from 1 July 2026 to mow the grass.
- This most likely means no mowing organised by the church office before then.
- If the cemetery is to be kept tidy until then, the work will in all likelihood have to be done through working bees.
Ulriksen encourages someone to take responsibility for the organising:
Is there anyone who would like to take charge of organising mowing working bees? That is, set a date and possibly call people together for a working bee.
He also mentions that there was talk of financial compensation for carrying out the work, but that this would in any case have to be taken up directly with the church office.
Worthy of a visit
For many, this is about more than just grass that needs cutting. As Ulriksen sums it up:
Just wanted to inform people about this, since it is much more dignified to visit a freshly trimmed cemetery.
For now, then, it is the local community spirit that keeps the cemetery in Sydalen in order. If you would like to contribute or take responsibility for organising the next mowing working bee, just sign up.
