In a packed village café, the manager spoke about tough times in the grocery trade.

Those present were invited to think creatively about measures and proposals for additional sources of income to create profitability.

The assembly was unanimous that the shop is both desirable, important and a natural gathering place and addition outside the school.

Many good suggestions were discussed and several committees were set up to continue working on various measures, including the reintroduction of "cake Saturday" and a rotation for "dinner Friday".

Confusion around § 22 of the allocation rules from the Merkur programme was also discussed, especially point d).

"The grant may be given to grocery shops that meet all the requirements of § 3, 1st paragraph and in addition

a) have a local market of under 200 households

b) have at least three additional services in addition to the sale of groceries, for example post and bank in the shop, betting, coffee corner, tourist facilities, municipal service office, sale of fuel, café/pub

c) have under 4 million kroner in annual turnover excluding value added tax, fuel, animal feed and fertiliser

d) have a minimum of 20 kilometres to the nearest alternative shopping location, or be located in places without a permanent road connection or be the only grocery shop on an island

e) be open all year, and be open at least 3 weekdays per week in the low season."

The initiatives will be followed up in the near future.
