Maundy Thursday was the day Jesus shared his last meal with his disciples, and had chess been invented at that time, we reckon it would have been a long-table tournament. Chess is believed to have originated in the 600s, but the modern chess we play today first appeared in the 1400s.
For Easter 2022, Sør-Brenna Chess Club is hosting, for the second year in a row, a free rapid chess tournament, open class (though for those with a FIDE rating below 2000). All chess enthusiasts are welcome, and you don't need to be Beth Harmon to participate.
All you need is:
- Knowledge of how the pieces move, and general chess rules.
- A smartphone/tablet, and knowledge of how these are used.
- The free App and an account on "Chess Time Live". (A more detailed description of this is coming)
- Good sportsmanship.
- The ability to resist the temptation to cheat.
(And otherwise Norwegian Law applies).
A «rapid chess game» is a chess game in which all moves must be made within a given amount of thinking time. In this tournament, participants have 15 minutes each, but get 2 seconds of additional time per move they make (abbreviated to "15+2").
The games are played on mobile/tablet via "Chess Time Live" (free app, but contains some advertising). A more detailed procedure for the app is coming in a separate post on Facebook.
Can't you play chess, or has it been a long time since your last game? Fear not! Check out "Torstein's Chess School" on NRK Nett-TV, which I would recommend to everyone! Here you'll find keywords like: scholar's mate, castling, en passant, draw, checkmate, strategy, opening theory, gambit.
First we'll gauge the interest. Then the tournament will be set up according to the number of participants. Registration is done by letting me know via text message +47 41 68 71 56, email: rempet90@gmail.com, or via the "Signal" app. An event will also be created on Facebook.
NB: As is often the case with enticing phenomena, rapid chess also has a darker side, and we must therefore inform you of possible side effects: mood swings/trembling/mental exhaustion.
